RAYC News - Relaunch of new Alfred Superleague next season

The Royal Alfred Yacht Club is relaunching the Superleague concept to a new generation of sailors in 2012 with the aim of rewarding the best boats, skippers and crews, across the whole season, in each class in Dublin Bay.
The Superleague will consist of 10 individual events/races - 6 Club Regattas - DMYC, RAYC Bloomsday, HYC, NYC, RIYC, RStGYC - together with 4 DBSC Saturday races - 1 in May, July, August and September. There will be 4 discards with 6 results to count. Bloomsday is non discardable. This will provide for very close overall results with final results in the balance right up to the last race in the series.
The Superleague will be open to all classes of keelboats in Dublin Bay. In 2011 there were 15 keelboat classes with 300 boats. Visitors from Howth or elsewhere will also be welcome. Entry fees will be modest and structured to reflect the number of crew in each class/boat.

Jaguar is Boat of the Year

Martin Byrne's Jaguar winner of the Edinburgh Cup 2011 was awarded the Alfred Boat of the Year by Commodore Peter Beamish at the Alfred Prizegiving Dinner. Jaguar had completed the impressive double of winning the British and Irish Championships. Harry Gallagher was presented with the Dr John O'Leary Trophy for lifetime services to sailing.

Flying Fifteen Liffey Challenge success

Light airs on a sliver mirrored Liffey, as captured on the Saturday's Irish Times, greeted the nine entrants of the inaugural RAYC Flying Fifteen Liffey Challenge held on Friday August 26th. A force three wind filled and changed direction frequently meant that tactical decisions coupled with luck, played a large part in the day's racing. On some legs those who hugged the quay walls continued to hold the wind whilst those who opted for the centre of the river occasionally found themselves going backwards on the current.

The sight of the boats on a spinnaker run filling the Liffey from side to side was stunning. Alan Green and Chris Doorley were convincing winners at the end of the
series of three completed and one abandoned race.

Refreshments and prize-giving in the Poolbeg Sailing Club were followed by towing the boats to the mouth of the river from where they had an excellent broad reach back to Dun Laoghaire. The positive feedback and obvious enjoyment of the competitors should ensure this event will become a fixture on the Royal Alfred event calendar.
